Abstract sculpture
The artistic exploration of the artists of the Dutch neo-plasticism genre mainly focuses on geometric abstraction. For them, it is a natural result to extend the achievement of expressing inner feelings with abstract formal language in painting to the art form of spatial form. They easily absorb the structuralist stuff. The Dutch sculptor George Van Tongelo is one of the prominent representatives. He concentrated his energy on the sculpture that constitutes art by occupying a certain form of space, but his artistic experiments did not exceed the original artistic ideals of Tatlin and others.
The major achievement of the Constructivist and later artists who joined the exploration of abstract sculpture was the important development of the language of sculpture. Traditional sculpture is the art of volume, which is to carve or mold on the volume of amorphous raw materials, and then create a shape. Constructivist sculpture, on the other hand, surrounds and defines space in the form of a transparent frame, making sculpture an art in three-dimensional space. The shape of sculpture no longer depends on shaping volume, but on defining space and unfolding in space.
